The workers have not been paid for 6 to 13 weeks, and have been demonstrating in different parts of Bangladesh’s industrial belt. The strike entered its fifth day on May 18.

The movement spans over 300 cities across the world. It is no longer limited to exploited employees in the fast food industry but has expanded to include home health aides, child care teachers, airport workers, adjunct professors and even retail employees.

The workers are protesting under the banner of the United Food & Commercial Workers union. The strike began after the company introduced fresh provisions to cut down on workers’ benefits during contract negotiations

The protesters demanded that the changes to the ‘Fair Deal’ nursing home scheme that were introduced in 2018 be implemented immediately as well as retrospectively.
